Rumors are circulating that production on The Batman won’t start until 2019.
Director Matt Reeves wanted to start production in the summer of 2018, but that now doesn’t seem likely. It’s not much of a shock to think the film may need a little more work before production starts. When Matt Reeves stepped in for Ben Affleck to direct, he threw out the script that Affleck and Geoff Johns wrote, and last Summer, Reeves was still working on the script. These rewrites alone where enough to push back production.
If cameras do start rolling next year, the movie probably won’t be released until mid to late 2020. With five DCEU films currently on the slate (Aquaman, Shazam, Wonder Woman 2, Suicide Squad 2 and possibly Flashpoint), Warner Bros. has plenty to work on and promote.
The one question still unanswered is whether or not Ben Affleck will be the actor who dons the cowl. It’s been reported that he wants out, but wants to segue out of the role in a smooth fashion. He has one more film in his contract with WB and that may be Flashpoint. If Affleck does not return, Jake Gyllenhaal is reported at the top of the list to suit up.
