It’s been at least a week since there was a Superman/Batman related story, so step forward screenwriter David S. Goyer, who’s just had a quick chat about the DC superhero smackdown with The Associated Press.
“One of the things that’s been fun for us,”
he says, referring to the tsunami of internet fan discussion,
“is we’re a bit further along than I think people realise.”
Of the fans’ vocal opinions and worries about the direction of the Man Of Steel follow-up, Goyer is sympathetic but unmoved. “We’re conscious of the fan point of view when we’re working on these things,
” he explains, “but you can’t let yourself be paralysed by that. At the end of the day you still have to create something, and if you try to think about what the fans would like, you stop being creative. It’s sort of like, where does it end?”
It ends with Spider-Man 3 and Terminator: Salvation, so you can’t help but feel that he’s correct in his approach. “You have to write the story that you want to write,” he says, “and hope that people want to see it.”
Then, of course, there’s that perenially burning question: who would win in a fight between Superman and Batman?
“Most comic book purists would say Batman,”
Goyer believes,
“even though it makes no sense whatsoever! Batman is the ultmate strategist, but if Superman just flicked his finger Batman would be done for. But you’ll have to watch the film in a year and a half, whenever it comes out, to see what happens…”
Batman Vs. Superman – or whatever it ends up officially being called – is directed by Zack Snyder and stars Henry Cavill as Supes and (you’ve possibly heard) Ben Affleck as Bats. It’s aiming for a July 15, 2015 release.
