Summary
The trials of Harley Quinn continue in “Metamorphosis” as Harley undergoes a big change thanks to The Three Witches. This issue brings Tina and Harley closer together as friends, as well as bringing Harley one step closer to being The Angel of Retribution.
The Lords of Order and Chaos have chosen Harley as their newest champion to go through six trials. Heralded by Mirand’r, these trials aim to put Harley through toughest times of her life as of yet.
Positives
This issue is rife with emotion. Humphries brings forth something that is very present in today’s society, a person’s image. Most of the issue is Harley’s internal struggle with her new image. It’s not until she receives a pep talk from Tina that she comes to realize that is shouldn’t matter what you look like on the outside, but who you have surrounded around you.
Basri’s artwork compliments Humprhies’ writing fantastically. Harley Quinn has always been a comic of high intensity and deep emotions, something that the artwork always seems to match. There’s a scene in this issue in particular that really brings this into light. After Harley’s transformation, Tina and Mirand’r bump into her in an alleyway. When you read that scene, and the differences between the artwork and script for each character; you’ll be blown away.
Negatives
This issue felt a little out of place for me. I honestly don’t think Harley cares as much as she seemed to have done. When it comes to Humphries’ version of Quinn, she seems a lot more happy-go-lucky, and probably would have been a lot more easy going. Regardless of how people acted towards her.
The only other time Harley has seemed like she cared about what people thought about her, was when she needed their views on her videos. Other than that, Harley has been, unapologetically, herself. I missed that in this issue.
Verdict
Yet another strong another issue of Harley Quinn from Humphries and the team. Two of the six trials are down, and the third has been teased at in the last couple of pages in this issue too.
I look forward to what Humphries has planned for Coney Island’s own Harley Quinn!
