Once upon a time, Peter Jackson was the front runner to direct Aquaman.
Then he said, “no”.
The man who brought Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit to life, Peter Jackson, was offered the opportunity to direct Aquaman for DC/Warner Bros but turned it down, twice.
In an interview with Empire, Peter Jackson revealed that former Warner Bros CEO, Kevin Tsujihara, offered him the directors chair on Aquaman.
“He (Kevin Tsujihara) said, ‘Are you a fan of Aquaman?’ I said, ‘No.’ Six months later: ‘Peter, are you a fan of Aquaman?’ I said, ‘No, Kevin, I already told you this’ I’m not a superhero guy. Â I read Tintin…Look, films are hard. Â I only want to make something I have a passion for.”
Eventually James Wan took up the task of bringing Atlantis to life and guided Jason Mamoa in his first, major solo outing on the big screen as Arthur Curry. Â Aquaman ended up bringing in $1.143 billion dollars worldwide for Warner Bros and became the highest grossing DC movie of all time.
Aquaman 2 is currently in development and set for a December 2022 release date.
