Jaume Collet-Serra is in negotiations to direct Black Adam starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. This is the one of the first pieces of news we’ve seen since the film was announced. It will also be Johnson’s first role in the comic book genre. Warner Bros. is prioritizing Black Adam in hopes of riding the coattails of Shazam and its success.
Johnson and the studio pursued Collet-Serra as the director because they were impressed with his ability to transition from dark to light material like he did with The Shallows and Jungle Cruise. They were also confident in his ability to handle a large budget. FlynnPictureCo and Seven Bucks productions will produce along with Johnson. Additionally, Collet-Serra was a name being thrown around as a potential director for Suicide Squad 2. His movie Jungle Cruise will hit theatres July 24, 2020.
Below is what Johnson had to say about the movie:
“This project…we had some challenges and we took a risk. As we were developing this a few years ago, the challenges and the struggles that we were having and that was gnawing at my gut [was] that we were trying to tell two origin stories in one script…. The challenges were, as you guys can imagine, you’re trying to tell two very big origin stories in the world of comic books of this DC Universe—two very important characters—trying to tell both their origin stories in one script. I didn’t think it was working.”
Black Adam is Shazam’s nemesis and was originally going to be introduced in Shazam. The studio decided to separate the characters into two movies. Now, producers of Black Adam say they hope to start shooting in about a year. How do you feel about Jaume Collet-Serra as director? Let us know in the comments!
