It is with a heavy heart that DCN is reporting that veteran comic book artist and Superman illustrator Al Plastino passed away this afternoon at 91, after a long fight against prostate cancer.
Mr. Plastino’s career began back in 1941, working for a little known publisher called Dynamic Comics. After serving in World War II, Mr. Plastino worked freelance until finally connecting with DC Comics in 1948. He would come to call DC Comics home until the early seventies. During this time he worked on Superman as a “second string” artist, whenever Curt Swan and Wayne Boring were unavailable.
He is famous for his work on the original Supergirl, as well as the Legion of Super Heroes.
In 1966, Mr. Plastino also worked on the Batman serial newspaper strip. He also did some unpublished work on Charles Schulz’s Peanuts, until, according to reports, Mr. Schulz became “furious” (though not at Mr. Plastino) and continued to work on the strip.
