Christopher Dennis, California’s own “Hollywood Superman,” has gone on his final flight at the age of 53.
San Fernando Valley authorities found the actor dead, but there is no further information as to cause of death.
Christopher established his reputation walking Hollywood Boulevard in a cosplay-esque Superman costume. His uncanny resemblance to the late Christopher Reeve, coupled with his height, made the red-and-blue uniform an easy fit and instant draw for fans. For years he posed for pictures and eventually caught the attention of late night host Jimmy Kimmel. Dennis made numerous appearances thereafter on Jimmy Kimmel Live!
“Chris was a sweet guy who appeared on our show many times and was well-liked by [the crew],” a statement provided by a spokesperson. “We will miss him.”
Dennis himself reflected on his beginnings in a 2017 interview as the result of an accident. “I came up with an idea while I was waiting tables. These people that I’m waiting on keep saying how much I look like Christopher Reeve or Superman. So I jimmy-rigged an outfit. They loved it.”
The year before this interview, Christopher had fallen on hard times. Not only did he wind up homeless after his motor home was towed, but he had been beaten and his Superman suit stolen. “I felt like I was dead and I was now without a job. I lost my dignity and my pride. So, I found myself panhandling on the corner. I had to do something.”
Through social media, his story touched the hearts of many and led to multiple donations that enabled him to both find an apartment and buy a Henry Cavill-inspired Superman costume.
“When I put on this suit, I am Superman, ” Dennis had later said. “I think it has made me a better person.”
The Super Museum in Metropolis, Illinois, issued a statement on social media reflected on Dennis’s passing:
“We’ve known Chris for many years. [He] spent time with our family and showed lots of support for our museum and the Superman celebration. Chris has had many struggles and ups and downs over the years. We hope that he is at peace now. And we pray for comfort to those who loved and cared about him.”
