Summary
NEW-VILLAIN ALERT: THREE-EYED JACK!
Jinny Hex stars- in her first solo adventure-and she’s ready and raring to go! Bursting out of the pages of Young Justice, this fan-favorite gal is heading back home to take care of some unfinished business! Hoping to take some time off from Multiverse conflict, Jinny reconnects with some old friends and family. But that all goes out the window when a new foe called Three-Eyed Jack transports her town back to the Old West. Now it’s up to Jinny to face off with this super-powered gunslinger and save her town! But Jinny’s about to learn that some threats are closer to her heart than expected.
Positives
News flash: Gleb Melnikov is really, really good. This young Ukrainian has been making noise all around the comic book world. He will be taking on Robin soon. He spent time in Sunnydale and Los Angles with Angel and now, he gets to bring the most fun and freshest face in the DC Universe to life. He is so expressive and since Jinny wears all of her emotions right on her face, Gleb is the perfect person to bring her to life.
Writer Magdalene Visaggio is fantastic here as well. She captures the perfect tone of a young woman battling loss, demons and her own future. This is the way the Young Justice characters should be handled for the next year or so. Give each one a stand alone book and let Visaggio write a story. We would all be winners.
Negatives
Jinny Hex Special #1 is not for everyone. I mean, it should be, but because she is not a well known character, this book does not really welcome everyone with open arms. It is a great story, but the asterisk with the see Young Justice note does not really work.
Verdict
This special issue was a fun romp featuring a great new edition to the DC Universe. Who knows if she will become a regular anywhere any time soon, but it was great to spend time with, what I consider, one of the real bright spots of Young Justice. The world needs more mad ass female lead books. I am hopeful, this is just the beginning of her story and not the end.
