Summary
Superman returns from the Bizarro world just in time to stop Jon-El from merging with his son Johnathan. However, with Jon-El on the loose, the citizens of Smallville aren’t safe.
Positives
“Truth and Consequences“ picks up almost immediately where our previous episode left off, with Jon-El arriving on Earth, ready to merge with Jonathan Kent. The struggle between the two is brief, with the powerful Jon-El winning, however thanks to the timely arrival of Superman, Johnathan is saved. Later, Clark reassures Jonathan that although their relationship isn’t perfect, he loves him and will do anything to protect him. It’s here that Clark feels the weight of what happened to the Kent family on the Bizarro world that makes him think about his choices slightly differently when he returns. Lana wins as mayor of Smallville, but when she runs into Clark outside of the local cafe, he has no idea. Feeling brushed off by Clark’s dismissive attitude, Lana leaves not knowing the reason for Clark’s attitude. Encountering Jon-El in the street while talking to Lana, Clark was attempting to get rid of Lana quickly before the situation escalated, but Jon-El ends up disappearing instead.
Negatives
A lot of lies were told in this episode, so it seems that its title “Truth and Consequences“ fits perfectly. Attempting to fix his relationship with Sarah, Jordan keeps texting her, and with Lois’ advice decides to write a letter instead. When Lana gets kidnapped by Jon-El, Sarah goes to Lois and the Kents looking for answers. Lois knows that Lana was taken by Jon-El, but simply tells Sarah to go back to the mayor’s office and to wait for her phone call. Jordan is angered by Lois’s blatant lie, especially after finding out Lois went behind his back and talked to Sarah about their relationship.
Superman shows up to save Lana, but thanks to Jon-El’s planning a small bomb laced with kryptonite shards pierces the Man of Steel. Falling to the floor and dying slowly, an overconfident Jon-El takes off to engage Jordan one more time in a fight. Thanks to Lana, Superman is saved from the kryptonite shards in his chest, and he immediately takes off to stop Jon-El once and for all. Jordan is already however holding his own against his twisted version of his brother. By the time Superman arrives, Jon-El is down and beaten and the pendant is ready to be taken in Superman’s possession. With pendant in hand, Superman knows that this is far from over, but at least the struggle against Ally is finally turning in his favor.
Verdict
“Truth and Consequences“ was a great episode that shows the Kent family at their best and I’m here for it. Through their darkest moments, this family still manages to come together and figure things out. In the end, it was the reveal of Clark’s identity to longtime friend Lana Lang that showed a good moment of the family coming together and finally making a unified decision. Now with Lana knowing Clark’s identity, I wonder if somehow Sarah will figure out about Jordan having powers as well. Can’t wait for the next episode.
