Christina Ricci has been cast as Harley Quinn, but don’t expect Margot Robbie to be out of a job.

Rather, Ricci will be lending her voice to DC’s favorite screwball in a radio drama podcast series entitled Harley Quinn And The Joker: Sound Mind. She will be joined by Billy Magnussen as The Clown Prince of Crime, and This is Us alum Justin Hartley as Batman. This will be Hartley’s third DC related project, as he played Oliver Queen/Green Arrow on Smallville, and recently voiced Superman in the animated feature Injustice. Ricci herself, meanwhile, voiced Terra in the DCAU feature Teen Titans: The Judas Contract.

Christina is Harley… But What’s The Concept?

This is the second collaboration between Warner Bros. and Spotify, the first being the successful Batman: Unburied. It has the same principle as the vocal recordings conducted by Andrea Romano for 1992’s Batman: The Animated Series.

Produced and developed by Eli Horowitz, Sound Mind tells a Joker story from Harley’s point of view. It also offers a side of Harley that had not been covered before.

Here is a description of the series offered in a logline:

Her dad is sick, and in need of an expensive, life-saving operation Harleen can’t afford. So when she meets ‘Patient J,’ a unique criminal who seems to have a strange power over everyone but her, Harleen makes a fateful decision: to use her relationship with J to get what she needs, leading both of them down a dangerous path that will change their lives forever.

Created in 1992 for BTAS, Quinn was initially a one-off character co-created by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm, loosely based on a character portrayed by the woman who would voice her, Arleen Sorkin. The character’s zany personality as The Joker’s girlfriend and accomplice caught fire. Her origin was revealed in the Eisner-Award winning one-shot Mad Love.

Besides Margot Robbie’s live-action portrayal, Sorkin would be succeeded as Harley by actresses such as Tara Strong, Hynden Walch, Melissa Rauch and Kaley Cuoco. Cuoco’s mature-themed Harley Quinn animated series, on which she also serves as executive producer is going into its third season on HBO.

The character will be celebrating her 30th anniversary this coming September, alongside BTAS.

There is currently no release date for the podcast series.
