Sometimes, there isn’t enough to say for a complete review, but there is still something to be said. That’s what Quick Takes is about. It would be difficult to review EVERY comic I read in a week, but I’ll always have something to say. So, here’s to something new…Quick Takes for the Week of January 8. 2025. Be sure to comment on what you’re reading and enjoying this week and check out the full reviews for the week at DC Comics News!  It’s a small week this week for DC Comics!

Absolute Batman #4

I’m guessing that if you are enjoying Absolute Batman, then you will enjoy this issue.  Scott Snyder shows us more of the anger in this Bruce Wayne than we usually see upon the death of his father.  Snyder includes lots of details and Easter Eggs like he’s done since issue #1 so that we get the “oh, look how clever I am moments.”  Perhaps, this take works better for those looking to make sense of their own anger.  As a Batman story, it still has the, “but, why though?” feeling.  A lot of the script is heavy handed and overwrought and it was hard to focus when reading.  I know I’m not the target audience for any of the Absolute titles and Absolute Batman #4 seems to twist even further from the Venn Diagram that includes enjoyable comics.

Batman and Robin #17

Javier Fernandez’s art is exceptional!  It’s bold, breathtaking, but also subtle and nuanced.  And, there’s an awesome double page spread!  Wow.  I mean…WOW!  Phillip Kennedy Johnson’s story has all the elements of a great Batman story.  This comic is so good that if you haven’t been reading…this issue will hook you!  It’s got a little something extra as it asks the question that’s been debated…does Batman bring the craziness to Gotham? Is HE the problem?  It’s really the other aspects, though that make this issue so good.  Johnson is really taking the opportunity to examine Bruce and Damian’s relationship as well as their similarities and differences.  THIS is an excellent comic!
