David Heyman, producer of the “Harry Potter” films, is currently developing a movie adaptation of Bill Willingham’s Eisner winning Vertigo series Fables according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film will be penned by Jeremy Slater (writer of the 2015 Fantastic Four relaunch) and directed by Nikolaj Arcel (director of A Royal Affair, and writer of the 2009 adaptation The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo).
Previously the property was under development for film with the Jim Henson company back in 2004. Later, in 2008, ABC considered turning Fables into a television series, but that also fell through, though ABC would go on to produce it’s own fantasy-genre hit “Once Upon a Time.”
Fables, which debuted in 2002, is an ongoing series about fairy tale and fantasy characters such as Snow White, Cinderella, and the Big Bad Wolf, that are forced to flee their magical land and make a new secret home called “Fabletown” in New York City.
