Earlier today it was confirmed that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will be Black Adam in the newly planned film based off of the DC Superhero Shazam, formerly known as Captain Marvel and that he will be somewhat of an antihero trying to clear his name as opposed to a villain as we’ve seen in his various comic book, animated movie, and video game interperetations.
Also announced is that New Line, a subsidiary of Warner Brothers will be making this film and the president of New Line,Toby Emmerich, made it clear to Entertainment Weekly that the Shazam movie will feature a much different tone than that of other superhero films. “It feels to me like Shazam will have a tone unto itself,” he explained. “It’s a DC comic, but it’s not a Justice League character, and it’s not a Marvel comic. The tone and the feeling of the movie will be different from the other range of comic book movies.”
Emmerich also stated that on the superhero movie spectrum, which spans lighthearted and fun to dark and gritty, that this film will take on “a sense of fun and a sense of humor” but with real stakes.
The film has also hired Darren Lemke as the writer for the film while there is not much else about this movie’s crew we can confirm or deny. As for a cast, well if anything has been decided then the public is very much in the dark about it with exception to the aforementioned casting of Johnson in the role of Black Adam.
“Black Adam is a complex character,” says Emmerich. “The villain in superhero movies is often, I think, what makes the movie. And I thought Dwayne’s take on the character, and the way that he saw Black Adam, was really compelling and fun.”
The movie as of right now has no release date however more is expected to be releaed about this movie in the coming months.
Details surrounding this film’s connection to the new and heavily promoted “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and the DC cinematic universe that would be built upon it are iffy and it is not yet known what the movie will be about, but hey, more DC movies are always exciting.
