Welcome to DC Comic News Dynamic Cosplay Presents:

Huntress

Cosplayer:  Laís Reis

DCN: What made you choose Huntress
Laís Reis: First of all, thank you for this opportunity! I chose to do a version of the Huntress because I absolutely love everything related to the Bat-Family and she is a character that I particularly enjoy – both Helena Wayne and Helena Bertinelli. And even though the latter is my favorite, I thought Wayne’s New 52 design was pretty great and I tried to achieve something similar to that.

DCN: Outside of cosplay do you have any other hobbies/interests?

Laís Reis: Yes, I do! As a huge DC Comics fan since I was little, I’m also a comic book collector and reader. Besides that, I really enjoy reading about international politics, drawing and baking goods.

DCN: How do your friends and family feel about you cosplaying? Are they supportive?

Laís Reis: My friends and family are fortunately supportive of cosplay, so I never had any problem with them concerning this activity – on the contrary, most of them think it’s amazing! My brother is also a cosplay enthusiast and he has recently started cosplaying on Comic Cons alongside me, you can see him as the Flash in a pic below!

DCN: How long have you been cosplaying?

Laís Reis: I started cosplaying only two years ago, I’m still a beginner! My country, Brazil, was lacking big comic cons and the vast majority of events were only anime-focused, so I only did very casual cosplays. I started small, wearing custom shirts of my favorite superheroes to go to comic book festivals and such. But back in 2014 when I heard the news we were going to have a huge Comic Con in São Paulo on December, I got really pumped and decided to do more than just a casual cosplay.

DCN: Why do you cosplay?

Laís Reis: I do it mostly because it’s a great way to connect with fans and bring joy to people. It has also helped me a lot dealing with some personal insecurities. I’m a very shy girl and I’m not that confident with my body, plus I had this irrational fear of what people could think if I rocked a bolder costume. As I said before, for me cosplay is a way to connect with fans, but it’s also a way to express yourself, show your love for a character– no matter your race, gender, age or shape. So after the great experience I had with my Huntress, I challenged myself and decided to do a cosplay out of my comfort-zone – the Starfire one (even though it’s probably one of her most dressed versions lol). It might not seem like it, but it was a huge step for me and I got really positive feedback that helped me get over my own obstacles.

DCN: What was your favorite cosplay project?

Laís Reis: Hmm… hard to decide. The one I most enjoyed creating was my Huntress cosplay and it has a very special place in my heart since it was the first. But I also really enjoyed my Starfire project last year because it was the one that really drew the attention of children, since it was based on her new DC You design and has similarities with her cartoon version. They loved it and were so excited, asking for their parents to take pictures with me like it was Disneyland! They were adorable and I did my best to stay in character and cheer them.

DCN: Do you have any cosplays you will never do and why?

Laís Reis: I admit that I had some restrictions with characters whose costumes have too much skin exposed, but now I’m more comfortable with that. I tend to avoid characters that I’m sure that will be super popular where I’m going (*cof*Harley*cof*).

DCN: What DC Comics character may we see next from you?

Laís Reis: I’m not so sure yet, but for this year I’m thinking about Donna Troy, Jade or a gender-bent Arsenal (the golden arm one).
