Wonder Woman is having the time of her life! With the confirmation of having a sequel in December 2019 and an awesome, jam-packed Justice League trailer that features the Amazonian Princess, Diana Prince is really one badass warrior. And to top it all off, Wonder Woman just claimed a big new sales record and still continues to rewrite common knowledge on what moviegoers wants.
After smashing records in its opening weekend box office and surpassing its predecessors (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad) on its second-weekend sales, Wonder Woman became the biggest live-action film that has been directed by a woman. And now she just dethroned another title and claimed its place as the highest grossing film of the summer at the domestic box office, taking in $390 million in ticket sales domestically so far, and will easily pass $400 million..
This is totally awesome, considering it’s a movie about a female superhero, directed by a woman. These are two characteristics which were assumed to make a movie underperform in the box office. And Wonder Woman just proved them wrong!
Wonder Woman’s domestic gross beats last year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice which had $330 million while Suicide Squad earned $325 million. Although the film hasn’t overtaken the worldwide sales of the two movies (or the Marvel movie she dethroned), its overall gross thus far, which is over $780 million, already outpaces Suicide Squad’s $745 million and is catching up with Batman v Superman’s $873 million.
It is now starting to look like Wonder Woman will be remembered as a movie that defied the expectations of many. It will also be remembered as a game-changer when it comes to films in Hollywood.
