Recently, Funko offered fans a look at Willem Dafoe’s Vulko in DC’s upcoming Aquaman film. While the release of the film is over a year away, fans have been lucky enough to get tons of Jason Momoa as the titular undersea hero. After Momoa’s reveal in his full costume in an initial announcement for Justice League, we saw a glimpse of Aquaman in action in the film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. And since then, from the various Justice League trailers and to the promotional posters, Aquaman took center stage which then leads to his solo film coming next year.
With all that focus on the half-man half-Atlantean, however, little is still known about the premise of his solo outing. Although we had seen several behind the scenes photos from the production and also got a glimpse of Amber Heard’s Mera in full costume in the Justice League trailers, we still have little knowledge on what would transpire in the film.
Then, recently, a Twitter user got a chance to get a hold of an Aquaman Funko Mystery Minis figure. It is no other than Willem Dafoe’s character. Dafoe will be playing the Atlantean scientist named Nuidis Vulko with the DCEU twist.
While the features of the figure has been exaggerated, there are still details that obviously veer away from the comics. In the figure, it has a slimmer physique and a flowing head of hair. Also, it seems that Vulko is wearing similar armor like what Momoa has. Though Vulko doesn’t wear armor in the comics but he’s certainly wore one before. Even though the plating and color are different, it surely suits with the established Aquaman aesthetics.
Also, we can see that Vulko will not be unarmed. Although Vulko participated in battles before, he is not known as a fighter. And with Dafoe in the role, it shows that the DCEU is going to have a new take on the character. Luckily, we can get to see our first look of Willem Dafoe’s Vulko in Justice League for a cameo before seeing him in full action in next year’s Aquaman film.
Of course, Willem Dafoe will not be the only big name in the film. Also included are Nicole Kidman who would be playing Arthur Curry’s mother, Atlanna, and Dolph Ludgren as Nereus. With director James Wan at the helm, let’s expect that great things are about to happen “under the sea.”
Justice League is set to premiere on November 17 while Aquaman will hit theaters next year on December 21, 2018.
