Justice League Cinematographer Fabian Wagner confirms that the teaser image of a black variant of Superman’s costume tweeted in August of last year by portrayer Henry Cavill was indeed a working model that was shot for the film, but was left on the cutting room floor.
Wagner told Inverse, “It’s a cool looking costume. Sadly, we didn’t see that either in the final cut. Zack [Snyder] takes his time with telling the stories and that’s what I’ve always liked about his movies. There were a few scenes that I was very much looking forward to seeing which unfortunately wound up getting cut.”
In the 1993 Death of Superman storyline, following the influx of replacements and betrayal of one of them, the real Man of Steel returned to Metropolis resurrected in a black variant on his suit. Given that Superman met his end at the hands of Doomsday in the final battle in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, fans anticipated him appearing in a black variant. However, given Wagner’s confirmation, fans may still see those cut scenes in the Deleted Scenes special features on the bluray release of Justice League. The release date for that, however, has not yet been revealed.
