Acclaimed actress Morena Baccarin makes her return to the DC Universe and joins Gotham in the recurring role of Leslie Thompkins.

Leslie_ThompkinsGotham‘s iteration of the character will be “a gifted and dedicated physician” who was a friend of Thomas and Martha Wayne. She will be working at the newly opened Arkham Asylum’s Home for the Criminally Insane, where she will use her expertise to aid the ill and those in need. She will find herself drawn close to Detective James Gordon (Ben McKenzie) as she delves deep into the city’s dark and insidious waters. Baccarin will be playing a young version of the character who was depicted in the comics, and on Batman: The Animated Series, as having grey hair.

Director and producer Danny Cannon had previously confirmed that Leslie Thompkins would appear on the show. In the comics, Thompkins, created by Denny O’Neil and Dick Giordano, becomes a mother figure to the young Bruce after the death of his parents. In the comics, she worked mainly with orphans and criminals.

As to when viewers will see Thompkins remains unknown, but Baccarin is slated to become a series regular should Gotham get picked up for a second season. The actress also voiced Black Canary/Dinah Lance on the Justice League animated series; Cheetah in Batman: The Brave and the Bold, and Talia al Ghul in Son of Batman.

Her role on Gotham marks Baccarin’s return to Fox, previously co-starring on Joss Wheden’s Firefly as Inara Serra. Gotham airs Monday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
