Born and breed an Australian, I grew up loving comics and Saturday morning cartoons with my favourite DC characters. However this was pretty much where it stopped, we never really had many pop culture events. I few Star Trek conventions here and there, but that was about it. Over the last decade though, Pop Culture in Australia has picked up pace. So much so that the Supanova Pop Culture expo yesterday in Melbourne was celebrating 1 million total fans nationally in attendance.
Supanova started back in 2000, and has grown from strength to strength year on year to the point where it is now the biggest Pop Culture event in the country. Annually, the event circles through all major cities (Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Perth, and Gold Coast). I attended as press on Saturday the 16th and even though the weather wasn’t too attractive there where fans from all walks of life in attendance. Families, couples, young students, baby boomers, you name it, they where there. With a real buzz in the year, you had a plethora of options to choose from. Everything from the Cosplay studio, to the Exhibition floor, star signing opportunities, panels, and seminars. The event runs for 3 days (Preview night, followed by two full days of Events).
With a great range of guests in attendance, tickets range from $55 for the basic package, all the way up to $800 for ‘VIP SUPA_STAR’ Status.
Friendly staff are on hand to help no matter what you need, including a great range of food options. With a focus on the DC Universe, I was able to exclusively speak with a few stars that work in the industry so look out for my interviews coming online soon.
Comment and let us know if you’re from down under and have attended Supanova.
