If you’re counting down the days until BLACK LIGHTNING premieres on The CW you’re not alone! In the latest trailer for the upcoming electrifying hero, more of the character’s origins are explored!

The primetime landscape is making room for one more DC Comics legend when Black Lightning starring Cress Williams prepares to debut in just a few short weeks alongside its CW stablemates, but don’t expect to see Green Arrow or The Flash to pop in to fight crime with the electrifying hero. Jefferson Pierce is unlike the other heroes in the established Arrowverse in that his not necessarily the “new kid on the block”.

Pierce is getting back into the hero game after a crime wave plagues his city. A school principal, Pierce is unlike any of his CW predecessors in that he’s already established a legacy as the vigilante metahuman known as Black Lightning. A family man and parent with two daughters, Pierce decides the time has come to get back into the suit! The latest trailer is setting up more of the hero’s back story and introduces James Remar who plays a confidant of Jefferson’s.

Showrunner Salim Akil has revealed that Black Lightning has been in retirement for nearly a decade, and that what will set it apart from the other CW shows in primetime is that Black Lightning has a history that will be explored, and will introduce his backstory including his eventual origins. Black Lightning won’t be alone in his crusade, he’ll be joined by his own super powered daughters.

Whether or not Black Lightning will crossover into the Arrowverse similarly to how Supergirl makes leaps and bounds between the multiverse hasn’t been announced, but it would be difficult to keep this hero an outsider for too long. Though the tone of the show is dramatically different, with a more adult slant, Black Lightning will undoubtedly make a hair-raising impression on fans, when it strikes the airwaves on January 16 following The Flash.
