It seems that Wonder Woman 2 is on the way as the sequel to the 2017 hit movie will begin filming in the U.K. later this summer.
The DC Extended Universe has proved not to be the critics favorite franchise. One exception was Wonder Woman which received universal acclaim. Director Patty Jenkins and star Gal Gadot shattered the glass ceiling for female superheroes, and the film grossed a superb $821 million at the global box office. In domestic terms, it was actually DC’s highest-grossing film, making over $412 million.
It has been revealed that the sequel is set to return to the U.K. later this year. They believe the production will return to Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesdon, England. It has been a very popular location for a lot of Warner Bros. films, including the Harry Potter movies, Inception, Justice League, and The Dark Knight. The studios contain roughly 50,000 m2 of flexible space.
At this stage not much is known about Wonder Woman 2. We do know that it will be set during another important time in history, rumored to be the Cold War. One weird thing is that some reports have said that Chris Pine will be returning. That’s really out there considering he died in the first film and Wonder Woman was still clearly mourning him in Justice League, which in the timeline would be a century later.
The Cold War setting is a really interesting choice and it most likely will affect the tone of the sequel. The first film ended with a note of optimism because Diana rejected Ares’s hollow philosophy. She also insisted that humanity has the potential for both good and evil, and dedicated herself to serving as a champion of the good.
The First World War was not the “war to end all wars.” Instead, it led to a brief period of peace before the outbreak of the Second World War. A compassionate hero like Diana could not face the horrors of the Holocaust without being shaken to the core. That was followed by the Cold War, and the threat of nuclear Armageddon had never seemed so real. Wonder Woman would have seen man’s potential for destruction realized in ever-greater, more horrific ways. It’s no wonder she seemed to have hidden herself away from the world by the events of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.
And yet, even though the film has the potential for such a bleak backdrop, Patty Jenkins has insisted the sequel will be another “great love story.” Both Jenkins and Gadot have stressed that the film will explore Wonder Woman’s core values, with Gadot even suggesting the films could be like the “Wonder Woman bible.” Each movie could explore a different aspect of her character, a different example of her virtues and values.
With filming due to start this Summer, it won’t be long before we learn more about Wonder Woman 2.
