FX has finally put together their production team for the development of a pilot based on the critically acclaimed comic Y: The Last Man by Brian K. Vaughn and Pia Guerra. The show will simply be titled Y and it will explore issues of “gender, race, class, and survival”.

Y: The Last Man, the graphic novel series published by DC Comics under the Vertigo label, is based on the story of a man named Yorrick Brown who, through an epidemic that affects those with Y chromosomes (men only), becomes the last man on planet Earth. The series was lauded by critics and fans alike and received many awards and nominations for series creators Brian K. Vaughn and Pia Guerra.

After a failed attempt at a film adaptation back in 2009, FX has decided to move forward with developing a pilot for the title under the command of former American Gods showrunner Michael Green, who is notable for writing several recent hits such as Logan, Alien: Covenant, and Blade Runner 2049. Green will be joined by fellow producer and co-showrunner Aida Mashaka Croal, who is notable in her own right as a writer/producer for recent hits such as Jessica Jones and Luke Cage on Netflix.

As for who will direct the pilot, Melina Matsoukas, known for her work on HBO’s Insecure, Netflix’s Master Of None, and various music video projects, will sit in the director’s chair when filming begins on the pilot. It’s key to note that women of color are featured prominently in the production team for a series that deals with issues of race and gender as is the case with Y.

Matsoukas, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, and series creator Vaughn himself will executive produce the pilot should it see the light of day.
