The highly anticipated Arrowverse crossover, titled “Elseworlds”, just keeps on getting bigger as another character is set to be introduced during the event – Psycho-Pirate!
The three-part event will once again bring Supergirl, The Flash, and Arrow together, and even though DC’s Legends of the Tomorrow won’t be included, Tyler Hoechlin is returning as Superman, and Elizabeth Tulloch and Ruby Rose will be introduced as Lois Lane and Batwoman, respectively.
Introducing locations like Arkham Asylum, characters like The Monitor, and inspiration seemingly influenced by the Crisis on Infinite Earths story, Elseworlds is shaping up to be an epic crossover. Now, with a super villain like Psycho-Pirate joining the mix, the overarching Arrowverse conflict is turning out be undeniably dangerous.
According to TVLine, Bob Frazer has been cast as Roger Hayden/Psycho-Pirate. Historically associated with Darkseid’s Secret Society of Super-Villains, the character harnesses a mask that gives him the power to manipulate emotions. In Crisis on Infinite Earths, he’s recruited by The Anti-Monitor, who offers him partial world governance in exchange for maintaining emotional control over the population. And, though he will appear in all three episodes of Elseworlds, it’s unclear how much of this storyline will factor into the crossover.
Though the character will be a new addition to the Arrowverse, Hayden was referenced in an episode of The Flash in the 2049 article in which Iris wrote about Barry’s ongoing disappearance. In the crossover, he’ll be introduced as an Arkham Asylum inmate, and it appears as though he may have been involved – or at the very least present – on the night of Barry’s disappearance. It’s also worth noting that Iris’ article in The Flash features a quote from Hayden that just so happens to paraphrase the tagline for the Crisis on Infinite Earths comic book: “Worlds will live, worlds will die, and the DC Universe will never be the same.”
The growing implication of Crisis on Infinite Earths becoming the central story begs a lot of questions as to how one of DC’s most epic comic book stories can be condensed into a mere three episodes. The storyline features the tragic deaths of major characters, but also sets up an even bigger battle to come, which is a lot to handle for a series on the CW’s scale. That said, it may well be taking inspiration from the comic story, as opposed to adapting it beat for beat, and the results can potentially be just as epic as the source material itself.
The Arrowverse “Elseworlds” crossover will air December 9th-11th on The CW.
