After James Gunn’s recent firing from Marvel as director of the third Guardians of the Galaxy film, he is now in talks to direct the Suicide Squad sequel.

These negotiations occur after the sequel has already been slotted for a 2021 release and after James Gunn was named as a writer for the film.  Disney fired Gunn in July 2018 after old, controversial tweets resurfaced from ten years prior where he made numerous insensitive jokes.

The film has been confirmed as a relaunch and not a direct sequel.  Sources suggest that Gunn is planning a film completely different from the original 2016 Suicide Squad with mostly new characters and actors, and that the tone will be similar to his Guardians of the Galaxy films.  The film will be executive produced by Zack Snyder and Deborah Snyder and produced by Charles Roven and Peter Safran.
