‘Smallville’ Joins ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’ Event

…giving us ANOTHER Superman for the crossover event.

Word has dropped today that Tom Welling will guest star in the upcoming Arrowverse crossover, Crisis on Infinite Earths event on The CW.  Welling will reprise his Smallville role of Clark Kent, adding another Superman to the televised event.

Welling’s inclusion will make him the third Superman in the massive superhero event joining the likes of Tyler Hoechlin as the Arrowverse Superman and Brandon Routh (DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Superman Returns) who will appear in a costume inspired by Alex Ross’ Kingdom Come.

Crisis executive producer, Marc Guggenheim recently spoke out about the inclusion of Welling’s Smallville Superman:

“For eight years, Arrow has stood on the shoulders of Smallville.  Simply put, there would be no Arrow, and no Arrowverse, without it.  So when we first started talking about Crisis on Infinite Earths, our first, second and third priorities were getting Tom to reprise his iconic role as Clark Kent.  To say that we’re thrilled would be a Superman-sized understatement.”

For a decade, Welling played a younger version of Clark Kent on the hit TV show, Smallville.  For those who haven’t seen the show, it tracked Clarks journey from a high school hero to the characters move to Metropolis.  The series ended up avoiding any tights or superhero-ing until the final season when Kent finally becomes Superman and fights Darkseid.

Welling did speak about the Smallville finale in 2017:

“We jumped onto this idea that at the end of the show, the idea is that Clark becomes Superman and he’s out there, and we know he’s out there, but we can’t go with him, but that we know and we feel good that he’s out there doing good.  That was what we strove for, and I think we hit it. I liked the ending of the series, because it’s like, ‘Yes, he did it?’ I hope the audience didn’t feel like we didn’t show them something that they needed to see.  I felt like we gave them the jumping off point for their imagination as to what could happen.”

Since the final Smallville episode, Welling appeared in Lucifer, Parkland and Draft Day.

Crisis On Infinite Earths begins with Supergirl on Sunday, December 8th.
