Summary

Black Lightning is back for a third season! We catch up with our heroes in the Pierce Family facing a threat like they’ve never faced before – The Markovians. They have taken over the city and two months have passed since the events in the season finale. The people of Freeland are at the mercy of a military that wants to use metas for their own gain. How will the Pierces resist the take over? If the Markovians build an army of metas? Jefferson has been captured so it is up to Blackbird to stick up for the people of Freeland. We get a new villain in Commander Williams. Don’t worry, you’ll love to hate him as much as you did Tobias.

Black Lightning 3x01

Positives

The best thing about this episode is how it set up what could be an amazing season. The Markovian threat is on a whole other level that what the Pierce family has faced before, hating them overcome this predicament will be a thing of beauty. It was nice to see Blackbird get screen time! As much as last feel was about family, this season seems to be about power. Who has it, who doesn’t. How it corrupts and how it impacts human relationships. I love how this show does not shy away deeper themes.

Negatives

I wish the effects of agent Odell learning the pierces secret identity. I’m sure it will play a part this season, but I was expecting more fallout on the first episode.

Verdict

A superb set up for what will surely be another action packed but deep season of superhero mayhem The stakes are, as always, high. Let’s hope the characters don’t get lost in all the noise. One thing that sets Black Lightning apart and above the noise of so many competitors in the pop culture landscape, is having very believable characters that you want to spend time with. If the show keeps its focus we have a great season premier that lays the foundations for a very powerful season of television.
