Bart Allen is coming to Central City, but not in the way fans will expect.

Executive producers have announced Jordan Fisher (Grease Live!, The Secret Life of An American Teenager) has been cast as the infamous Impulse, but not as Barry Allen’s grandson. Rather, he is Barry and Iris’s son.  His first episode will be the 150th episode, which will be the 17th episode of the current season.

Here is the official character description: “The future son of Barry Allen and Iris West-Allen, Bart is the fastest teenager on the planet.  Due to Bart’s penchant for wildly impulsive behavior, a stunned Barry and Iris will have their hands full trying to teach their new son patience.  But, it’s a task they’ll have to accomplish, in order for their family to work together and stop Team Flash’s biggest threat yet!”

Bart has an extensive history in the comics, dating back to the 1990s when Wally West was the Flash.  The son of an Allen and a Thawne, Bart comes from the 35th century and became Wally’s new protege.  As Impulse, he went on to found Young Justice along with present day heroes, then graduated to both Teen Titans and Kid Flash, Wally’s old moniker.  When Wally and family were lost to the Speed Force, Bart was artificially aged to adulthood and became The Flash himself for a time. Post-Flashpoint, the young Allen’s timeline was thrown out of whack up until Brian Michael Bendis restarted Young Justice.

Fans of the series knows that Team Flash had been here before with the arrival of Nora Allen, Barry and Iris’s daughter, played by Jessica Parker-Kennedy.  In 2042, Death Row-bound Eobard Thawne (Tom Cavanaugh) manipulated Nora into travelling to the past to meet her father and altering his family’s history to prevent her father’s impending disappearance. By destroying The Thinker’s satellite, she created a new version of Savitar and a new dagger, the same dagger that kept future Thawne depowered and on death row. When they destroyed that dagger, Thawne was not only free, but two things happened. First, the Crisis was moved up to 2019 instead of 2024.  And, second, unfortunately, Nora was never born. By listening to Thawne, she fulfilled Barry’s fear at the beginning of the season and erased herself from existence.  Prior to that, however, when encountering Thawne in the past, The Reverse Flash mistook her for Dawn, one of Barry’s twins.  What all this basically means is that when it comes to The Fastest Man Alive, it makes that inevitable trip to the ultrasound more of a lottery.  When you’re expecting it to be twins or even a single daughter, you could wind up with a boy.  That’s what we have in this casting announcement.

Bart has made numerous appearances in various media. Jordan is the second actor to portray him on live-action  TV. He was first played by Kyle Gallner in the fourth season of WB/CW series Smallville, on which he made many appearances.  He was then voiced by Jason Marsden in the second and third seasons of the Cartoon Network’s Young Justice animated series.

Catch the next episode of The Flash this Tuesday at 8/7 Central on The CW.
