Back in 1989, the world was introduced to a much darker Batman than had ever been seen on screen with Tim Burton’s Batman. This film has become a classic, beloved entry in the comic book movie genre, alongside the follow-up, Batman Returns, and this universe is now getting the comic book treatment with the upcoming series Batman ’89.

We recently got a teaser look at what Marlon Wayans’ Robin would have looked like in Burton’s Batman universe and are now getting a first look at the premiere issue of this highly anticipated series. You can see the covers and a few pages from the first issue below.

The series launches on August 10 from screenwriter Sam Hamm (Batman, Batman Returns) and artist Joe Quinones (Dial H for Hero) and will dive into many of the unfinished threads from Burton’s two films.

When the new six-issue comic book run launches next month, Gotham City is being torn in two as citizens dressed as Batman and The Joker duke it out in the streets! As D.A. Harvey Dent tries to keep the city together, he targets the one problem tearing it apart: BATMAN! And he’ll get Bruce Wayne’s help in taking down the Dark Knight!

In this first look preview, all the classic elements of Burton’s Batman universe are on full display. Take a look and let us know what you think! Batman ’89 #1 hits shelves on August 10. Don’t miss it!
