Positives
This was a great way to get a backstory on Superman’s life from the audience’s point of view. I really enjoyed this episode. Here we find a young Clark still reeling from the loss of his father and confused about his place in the world. Once the Fortress of Solitude is built from the ground up, Clark is able to communicate with Jor-El and find his purpose in the world. This episode goes in depth with showing us all of Clark’s highs and lows throughout his life. From losing Lana Lang in high school, to becoming a father as an adult. One of my favorite scenes was his first encounter against a villain as Superman. I really love the attention to detail we have with the original suit. We even have a chance to see the love between Lois and Clark develop and grow to the strong marriage it is today. Now although I enjoyed this detailed but brief trip down memory lane, I wondered what the purpose of it all was–and I soon found that out.
Negatives
It seems that in each of these crucial memories from Clark’s life there’s a shadowy figure watching everything play out. At first it seems to be hardly noticeable. Even I didn’t notice myself at first in the initial scene. It isn’t until the discussion of Lois being pregnant at the hospital that Clark realizes that none of this is real–and Morgan Edge is watching him outside of the hall. Using Kryptonian technology, Edge has infiltrated Clark’s mind and saw everything that was crucial in Clark’s life. Armed with this knowledge Edge threaten Superman with the deaths of his family if Superman doesn’t submit and join him. A reluctant Superman agrees to have his mind altered by using the Eradicator technology.
Verdict
Superman & Lois 1×11 was a great episode and I can’t wait to see what happens when Superman encounters Irons. Lois has no choice but to go to Irons for help now that Superman has been mind controlled, but I’m curious to see how she’ll approach him. Irons will be out for blood, and not to save Superman.
