It seems like Batgirl is keeping things in the DC family as it’s been revealed that Doom Patrol star Brendan Fraser has been cast in the upcoming film in an undisclosed villain role.
Fraser currently voices Robotman on the hit HBO Max series Doom Patrol, which is currently in its third season, and was also confirmed for a fourth season during this year’s DC FanDome event, earlier this month.
Although not confirmed, rumors are that he will be playing the supervillain Firefly in the upcoming film.
This character has been around for nearly 70 years, making his debut in Detective Comics #184 in 1952. We have even seen two different live-action versions — the Garfield Lynns version appeared on an episode of Arrow, while a new, female version, named Bridget Pike, appeared in a recurring role on the series Gotham.
The former Mummy star has had quite the resurgence in 2021 that began with landing the lead role in Darren Aronofsky’s next film The Whale. After wrapping production on that, Martin Scorsese cast Fraser for a key role in his next film Killers of the Flower Moon, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro. He was also recently seen in Steven Soderbergh’s No Sudden Move.
Fraser will join Leslie Grace as Barbara Gordon, aka Batgirl, as well as Jacob Scipio and J.K. Simmons. Bad Boys for Life directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are directing, while Birds of Prey scribe Christina Hodson is on to write.
Batgirl will drop on HBO Max, marking one of the first major DC properties to debut exclusively on the streamer.
