Nightwing #88 – World’s Finest Sons…Part One

Superman/Nightwing crossover! Years ago, when Robin took his first uncertain steps away from Batman as his own hero, Superman stepped in and offered Dick Grayson crucial advice, support, and a name: Nightwing.

Now it’s time for Nightwing to return the favor.

Something or Someone is killing superheroes.  And all paths lead to an old nemesis of Jon’s father…you guessed it.  Lex Luthor.

Positives

Tom Taylor once again provides all the feels of fatherhood and friendship.  This is your Valentine’s Reese’s Cup if you will of two great tastes…Tom’s Jonathan Kent and Tom’s Dick Grayson.

When you see a little Jonathan Kent who is frightened by being lost, all of Superman’s friends on high alert to find him, and the simple conversations between Bruce and Clark about fatherhood, Taylor pulls on all the heart strings.

We get humor as well as the simple placement of lollipops and smoke bombs in the utility belt becomes a parenting thing!  Dads will get this!  Taylor’s storytelling pace, the asides, the comments, the sense of humor as well as sympathy/empathy…each issue of this book tugs on all of this.

Each issue I think he is going to rip the rug out from under me as I am becoming very comfortable with this book on all levels and don’t want to see DRAMA as much as I want to have that sincere hero and his relationships succeed.  No brooding…just some idealistic good.  Taylor delivers that!

So can we just celebrate waking up to a Kryptonian robot expressing to Dick and Babs that Jonathan needs more than a hologram and artificial life to really connect with right now?  There is no substitute for Clark being gone right now, but Dick plays a wonderful big brother to Jonathan in this comic.

Speaking of that wake up call….

The art!  Barbara and Dick in bed with Batman pajama pants and a “Go Titans Go” T-shirt.  Babs’ bed head makes her as gorgeous as Selina and Diana combined.  Their puppy…I love how Taylor weaves her into scenes effortlessly.  Hailey rules!

Negatives

None… Taylor is firing on all cylinders despite Twitter taking issue with Jonathan’s sexuality.  This two story arc is to be celebrated as a passing of the torch so to speak.  Dick and Jonathan are shining beacons on the comic front and we all need that right now!

Verdict

I’ll take the two of them together any day!  This is the new World’s Finest!  Again, Barbara and Dick are perfect together and Hailey makes three!  No spoilers, but we know where this road is leading and what a cliff hanger until next month.  Thanks to this team for elevating this book each and every time you release a new issue….never rip the carpet out from under us.
