This past week the superhero world was turned upside down when Warner Bros. announced that James Gunn would take over writing and directing duties on Suicide Squad 2. Â James Gunn made the jump to DC after being released from his duties of writing/directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 for Marvel Studios.
Gunn has received support from GotG star Dave Bautista whom then expressed his own interest in joining Gunn on Suicide Squad 2. Â Gunn has also received support from the man who directed the first Suicide Squad, David Ayer.
I think it’s an incredibly brave and smart move by the studio. James is the right man for the job! https://t.co/KaVD3dQosR

Despite his support, the biggest surprise came in the hiring of Gunn by Warner Bros. after Disney caved to far-right bullying and fired Gunn a few months back. Â Gunn makes the third director from Marvel to head over to DC; following in the footsteps of Patty Jenkins who was fired from Marvel Studios’ Thor: The Dark World and went on to direct the critically acclaimed Wonder Woman and Joss Whedon who saw success directing The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron yet flopped in his attempt to “direct” Justice League.
It has been reported that Gunn will bring a “fresh take” on the Suicide Squad and Suicide Squad 2 will not be a sequel, according to Gunn. Only time will tell if Gunn can recapture the magic he had with Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 while at DC or if his run with DC will be as ill-fated as Joss Whedon’s was.
