Production has begun on HBO’s Watchmen series.
It has been confirmed that this new series is a sort-of sequel to Dave Gibbons and Alan Moore’s 1980’s comic series and takes place in the present day. Â The series will feature new characters as many of the superheroes that fans know and love have either died or retired by the time the new series kicks off.
HBO’s Watchmen features a number of amazing actors that will lead the cast such as Regina King, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Jeremy Irons, Don Johnson, and Yahya Abdul-Marteen II in major roles. Â It has been speculated that Irons will play an older Adrian Veidt aka Ozymandias (the hero turned antagonist in the original Gibbons and Moore story) but HBO is firmly keeping a lid on the details surrounding the casting of the Watchmen series.
It has also been reported that Don Johnson will be playing a police officer on the series and recently a picture of Johnson with a group of police officers wearing yellow masks emerged. Â HBO has now released a photo of a cop from the series wearing a yellow mask in order to announce that production is formally underway on the series.
The series takes place in an alternate universe where costumed superheroes and vigilantes were outlawed in the late 1970s and it’s possible that by the time the TV show picks up, the police have responded to the continuing existence of masked crime-fighters by wearing masks of their own in order to protect their own identities.
With an actor like Don Johnson playing a police officer in the series it suggests that the relationship between the police and the present-day Watchmen should likewise feature into the series’ proceedings, since the franchise has always focused heavily on the moral and ethical implications of being a hero; it’s safe to say that Lindelof’s TV series will carry on with the tradition.
With the police factoring heavily into the HBO series, we might actually get an answer to the question, “Who watches the Watchmen?”
