We’ve been waiting for the newest Batman film for so long you probably forgot it was even happening. Details have been scare on Matt Reeve’s film but some new details have surfaced. Reeves has confirmed that not only is the movie happening, but we also have a potential release date. The standalone Batman film was in talks in October 2014 when filming of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice finished production. Fans were excited to find out not only was Ben Affleck starring in the film, but he was writing and directing it as well along with the help of Geoff Johns. In January 2017, it was sadly announced that Affleck would no longer be writing or directing the film, but just starring in it, and now we don’t know if that will ever happen.
Since February 2017, Reeves has been working on the new screenplay and rumors swirled that the film will be more of a reboot. In an interview with THR, Reeves neither confirmed nor denied Affleck’s involvement with the film but he did tease it would be a noir take on the story, and heavy on the detective:
“It’s very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale. It’s told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it’s going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional. It’s more Batman in his detective mode than we’ve seen in the films. The comics have a history of that. He’s supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, and that’s not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been. I’d love this to be one where when we go on that journey of tracking down the criminals and trying to solve a crime, it’s going to allow his character to have an arc so that he can go through a transformation.”
Previous filmmakers have stated their intentions for a detective Batman story, but none have ever come to fruition. If Reeves makes good on his promise, he’ll have done something no other filmmaker has done with the character. Reeves also confirmed The Batman is a working title, it may not be final and there may be multiple villains:
“There will be a Rogues Gallery. The casting process will begin shortly. We’re starting to put together our battle plan. I’m doing another pass on the script and we’ll begin some long-lead stuff to start developing conceptual things.”
But what about the release date? Well, it was supposed to be this year. Reeves states that he sees the release date as late spring or early summer of 2021. Luckily, Warner Bros. has not tied down a concrete release date so we may get to see it even earlier.
Hopefully, the film will be as great as we all hope it will be.
