Summary
Nightwing #59 starts off with a fantastic panel of Malcolm Hutch, one of the new Nightwings. A team of law enforcement officers, and now, our very own sidekick turned superhero Ric Grayson. Banding together after the disappearance of the original Nightwing, the team have been saving Bludhaven from threats such as Scarecrow and Joker’s Daughter!
Positives
Dan Jurgens takes over the torch, quite literally, and does an excellent job with this issue! There are so many good things in this issue I don’t even know where to start. I love me some lore and character backstory, and in Nightwing we have four new characters that we virtually know nothing about. That is, until now.
In this comic Jurgens takes Hutch and opens him up a little bit to the audience. Everything moves at such a great pace in this issue too. Every story beat seems fluid, and flows so naturally. The comic is a real joy to read, and look at. Mooneyham has been a pretty big part of the creative team on the Nightwinig comic for a while now, and it’s very easy to see why. His artwork is wonderful to look at, I mean, just look at the panels below.
Negatives
I find myself, yet again, not having many negative things to say about Nightwing. I’d like to see more interactions between the Nightwings. I feel like they are a group that has real chemistry, and a lot of potential.
I’d also love to see more of Ric and Rea’s relationship too! I think she’d be great for him, a real take-no-bull kind of woman who Ric needs to keep him in check!
So if you’re reading this Jurgens, more relationships please!
Verdict
Jurgens’ writing was fresh and energetic. Mooneyham’s artwork matches the pacing of the writing throughout the issue, and Nick Filardi’s coloring really makes the panels pop off the page!
Yet another solid issue of Nightwing. People that left after the transition from Dick to Ric, are really missing out!
