Marvel Studios and Disney have officially announced that the next chapter in the story of Steve Rogers, Captain America 3, is slated for a May 6, 2016 release date. This means it will be going head-to-head with DC’s next film, the tentatively titled, highly anticipated Batman vs. Superman. With both films set to do battle on this day, will this be amazing or disastrous? And which one, if either, will throw in the white flag in this high stakes game of chicken?
Now, even though Captain America: The Winter Soldier crushed the box office this weekend, making significantly more than the original, it still failed to reach the heights of the most recent DC films, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, and the first film in the new DC Cinematic Universe, Man of Steel, all of which grossed over $100 million on their opening weekends. Batman vs. Superman is primed to break those amounts, possibly even reaching the level of The Avengers at the box office.
Mostly likely, both films will suffer somewhat if neither of them give, but there is no doubt in my mind that DC’s Batman vs. Superman will absolutely own that day. I’m sure Captain America 3 will do very well, but fans have been waiting decades to see the Caped Crusader on the big screen with the Last Son of Krypton, and it is finally happening. It’s a dream come true. After seeing it in the comics and the cartoons for years, it’s about time we finally get the chance to see it happen live.
This years San Diego Comic Con will definitely be interesting. Hall H will be packed to capacity with hardcore fans waiting for just a small nugget of information about this film. Who’s the villain? What’s the actual name of the film? Will there be any other DC comics cameos? And with two SDCC’s before the release, DC will have to make them count. I’m hoping we finally get an official title this year. SDCC will be held from July 24-27 at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, CA. Batman vs. Superman will open in theaters on May 6, 2016.
