Positives
Green Lantern #20 is a straight up fun issue. There’s very little subtlety or nuance and it’s ok. It’s an issue that leans into the action and the plot. There’s been so much great character work throughout the series that an issue like this can work really well especially after the previous issue that did a lot with character and set up. Both of the plotlines in this issue move forward while also indicating how things might come together.
Jack Herbert really impresses when he depicts Hal in Greco/ Roman style power ring-created armor. It’s a cool look and Herbert makes it look great. It’s not something I’ve seen in a while and it conjures up images of the Golden Gladiator. It ads to the sense of fun that permeates and defines this issue.
Additionally, the visuals and reference to the Indiana Jones movies are a fun decision on Adams’ part. It’s not necessary to go on at length about how it’s used and the details, suffice to say that the details make the reference the fun moment that it is.
Negatives
Some may find the appearance of Starbreaker for the third issue in a row as a cameo a little disappointing. Adams is gearing up for something big with him and the Sorrow Lantern, and it sort of feels like it’s already time to get to it. I feel this kind of minor, but it’s understandable if readers are impatient with this slow developing aspect of the plot.
Verdict
Fun is the work for Green Lantern #20, and it’s a nice change of pace issue. There are some great details in Jack Herbert’s art as well as Jeremy Adams’ story details. Despite the lack of character work that we’re used to in this series, it doesn’t detract from the issue overall. With the set up from last issue getting both storylines really going is the right decision for the pacing in this series.
