DC Comics are attempting to stop singer Rihanna from trademarking “Robyn,” claiming it’s too similar to “Robin.”
Rihanna, whose real name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty, filed a trademark application in 2014 to allow her to use the name “Robyn” for a cosmetics brand, but DC are now saying that Rihanna’s “Robyn” is just too close to their Boy Wonder.
Since Robin is a profitable franchise of his own, DC claims that “Robyn” could deceive consumers into thinking that the brand was associated with Batman’s sidekick, and that “Robyn” was just an attempt to piggyback off the success of the long running iconic DC character, who recently celebrated his 75th anniversary.
If Rihanna and DC cannot reach an agreement, then they will take the battle to the trademark office, where it will be officially decided if “Robyn” is just too close to “Robin.”
