Wonder Woman continues to set all kinds of records at the box office so it’s no surprise that a sequel would eventually be announced. Although there was a lot of speculation as to whether or not its director, Patty Jenkins, would return, we can now confirm that she will be indeed the director of the sequel. Jenkins has already started to work on a treatment of the film alongside head of DC Films Geoff Johns and now she will take the helm once again to work with Gal Gadot and others to continue to build the story of the Amazonian princess.
Speaking at a Women in Film Q & A, Jenkins spoke about the epiphany she had regarding whether or not she will return .
“I had an epiphany about Wonder Woman 2. I was like, you don’t have to do this. It doesn’t have to be a foregone conclusion that you do Wonder Woman 2. But then as I was falling asleep I had an epiphany. I was like, Wait a minute. You have the greatest character of all time that you love dearly, with a cast that you love sitting at the palm of your hand at this day and age — you can do whatever you want with them — are you crazy? And then I suddenly realized, it’s not more, it’s another movie. It’s its own movie. And it’s got to be great.”(via Advocate)
This news should come as a relief to fans of the first film since they can now rest a little easier as to who will be driving the franchise moving forward. Another aspect of the film that was hinted at during the session was the time setting of the sequel. Jenkins said:
“It’s a continuation of the same character, but there’s a great, entirely different story to be told. With this character in our…in the world, that’s fun, because now she exists, just funny, and also says something profound about the world we’re in right now.”
Did Jenkins have some kind of mental slip in which she revealed that the sequel will take place in modern times? She quickly corrected herself to state that Wonder Woman lives ‘in the world’ rather than our current one.
One thing is for sure, the future of the Wonder Woman franchise, as well as the DCEU, continues to look bright for the foreseeable future.
UPDATE:
Patty Jenkins is now tweeting that her comments made at the Q & A do not confirm her status as the director for Wonder Woman 2. Here’s the tweet:
Hey All. Thanks for the excitement but that wasn't a confirmation. Just talking about ideas and hopes. But still excited and hopeful 😉 #WW2 https://t.co/oaFZcPrRWl
