It looks like Wally West’s tenure on the show is over before it even began. Actor Keiynan Lonsdale joined the Arrowverse during The Flash season two. He was introduced as Joe West’s long-lost son, Wally. Lonsdale stayed a series regular until season four, eventually becoming a speedster and suited up as Kid Flash. Midway through season 4 of The Flash, Lonsdale packed his bags and moved to Legends of Tomorrow.
Lonsdale and his character were better used on the show and it seemed like a perfect fit. Wally’s status on the team was in line with Legends’ on-going theme of picking up misfits and outcasts from the Arrowverse. But now, Lonsdale won’t be back as a series regular for season four of Legends. But that doesn’t mean Wally will be gone forever.
The season 3 finale will mark the end of Lonsdale’s tenure with the show, but that doesn’t mean his character can’t live on. It’s already been announced that Wally will make an appearance in The Flash season five premiere. It totally makes sense since Wally was last seen in the finale of season four. Wally missed out on big events like Barry Allen’s trial and imprisonment, he did get to meet his new baby sister Jenna, and sort of introduced to his niece from the future, Nora Allen. Supposedly the season five premiere will pick up on both threads with Wally getting to know his family members more.
Beyond the season five premiere, Wally’s future is uncertain. Legends of Tomorrow is already adding two new characters as regulars, John Constantine and Ava Sharpe. Perhaps there just wasn’t enough room on the roster for Wally. It is also possible that Lonsdale is moving on to pursue a film career. Lonsdale had a rather huge part in Love, Simon which was directed by Arrowverse mastermind Greg Berlanti. The news is disappointing, but not very shocking. The poster for season four of Legends of Tomorrow did not have Wally included. Unless something drastic happens in season five of The Flash, like death, Wally will still be alive and kicking. He is a speedster after all and can travel to any point at any time.
