Since its release in 2016, Suicide Squad has taken some serious fire from fans and critics alike. Â From it’s “rushed story” to “poor character development” there were many issues in the eyes of fans but nobody took more shots online than that of Jared Leto and his portrayal of The Joker in the movie.
Despite not having a lot of screen time (compared to the amount of footage shot), Leto’s Joker was lambasted by critics and fans and that has continued two years after the movies release. Â Recently, Suicide Squad director David Ayer admitted he took The Joker “one step too far” and the “Damaged” tattoo on his forehead was unnecessary. Â David Ayer took to his official Twitter account to interact with fans and was asked about his reasoning behind the Joker’s “Damaged” tattoo. Â Instead of some deep reasoning and insight behind his creative choice, Ayer admitted that it was a mistake creatively on his part, saying “it was a one step too far”. Â Some fans in the comments section were divided on the subject.
Despite all of the online hate, it’s hard to judge Leto’s performance as the iconic psychopath as the character got very little screen time in Suicide Squad. Â The upcoming Joker and Harley film will undoubtedly give Leto a fresh start at showing off his take on The Joker but with the upcoming Joker solo film starring Joaquin Phoenix, the expectations might be that much higher for Leto the next time he plays the character.
