Azzarello, Lupacchino Release New Birds of Prey Comic

A new Birds of Prey comic from writer Brian Azzarello and artist Emanuela Lupacchino is set to be released this October.  It’s meant to coincide with the upcoming movie starring Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and will even feature the movie’s unconventional lineup.  That’s right, these aren’t the Birds of Prey you might be used to, but rather a squad composed of Harley Quinn, Black Canary, Huntress, and Renee Montoya.

Azzarello had this to say about the upcoming comic:

“Having Harley involved screws with the new BOP dynamic — hell, with every dynamic.  She’s chaos, but she might be the most together member of the team. Canary, Huntress and Montoya have a lot of damaged baggage. Ema and I are gonna unpack it.”

Lupacchino also added:

“The Birds are a super-team I’ve never worked on before but that I‘ve always loved.  This will be a lovely opportunity to bring these women to life and let the reader feel their emotions. I’ll give them their energy and power.”

These four characters have been particularly absent from the DC universe lately, so there’s going to be a lot to catch up on.  Harley Quinn has only made a handful of appearances outside her own title since Suicide Squad ended in January.  Black Canary’s popped up here and there but has also been strangely absent since Green Arrow ended.  When was the last time you saw Huntress?  At least Renee Montoya is a fresh face… or lack of one, since she appeared in Greg Rucka’s Lois Lane #1 not long ago.

According to Azzarello, “Ema and I are pushing the envelope, both character-wise and plot-wise, with equal parts estrogen and adrenaline. Our BOP will be the must-read title every month. Ambitious? Sure. That’s why it’s worth doing.”  Are you excited for this new lineup in a Birds of Prey comic?  Let us know in the comments and check out a small preview below!
