The DCEU had been in turmoil for some years now, culminating in the release of the theatrical version of Justice League in 2017. Fan campaigns and critical reactions to that film prompted WB to let Snyder restore his original version of the 2017 film after he departed the project during post-production.
The #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement that helped Snyder restore his vision morphed into something else entirely in the months leading up to the film’s release. Fans on social media called for the restoration of the SnyderVerse, hoping that WB would allow Snyder to continue working within the DCEU and complete the story he began telling with 2013’s Man of Steel.
The film’s four-hour cut was released on HBO Max this past week, and fans were hoping that this would be a new beginning for the DCEU.
The movement already seemed like a longshot, but so, too, did the Snyder Cut at one point, prompting many fans to hold out hope that a rapturous response to Zack Snyder’s Justice League could encourage the studio to reconsider.
Unfortunately, it sounds like that will not be the case. Sarnoff tells Variety that there no plans to continue with the SnyderVerse after the Snyder Cut’s release on HBO Max. The CEO expressed how happy WB was that Snyder could complete his original vision for the film. Ultimately, Zack Snyder’s Justice League marks the completion of the trilogy that Snyder started. Sarnoff says that the studio is now looking to the future and what’s in store for the various films and television series in the works.
Sarnoff said “I appreciate that they love Zack’s work and we are very thankful for his many contributions to DC. We’re just so happy that he could bring his cut of the “Justice League” to life because that wasn’t in the plan until about a year ago. With that comes the completion of his trilogy. We’re very happy we’ve done this, but we’re very excited about the plans we have for all the multi-dimensional DC characters that are being developed right now.”
These comments shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who has been paying attention to the relationship between Snyder and WB in recent months.
So will there be a “Post Justice League” SnyderVerse? Both have said that there were no plans to continue with Snyder’s vision beyond the release of his version of Justice League, and Snyder has said he doesn’t want to make anymore comic book movies for the foreseeable future. Still, this did not stop many from holding out hope that WB could reverse course.
The studio has set a precedent with Zack Snyder’s Justice League, and many thought they could do that again if the film were received well enough.
While the Snyder Cut has been praised across the board as a vast improvement on the 2017 film, the studio has likely been in the planning stages for a post-Justice League world for a while now.
Laying the groundwork for a cinematic universe requires advanced planning, and the future of the DCEU was likely determined long before the studio decided to restore Snyder’s vision.
After all the teases at the end of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, this will probably be a massive disappointment for fans, but it sounds like it’s for the best for both the studio and Snyder himself.
You can stream the Justice League Snyder Cut currently on HBO Max as of March 18th.
