Summary

You better mask up!”
– The New Batman

Future State: Gotham #8 – The event that was DC Future State continues in its own ongoing title starring the Bat-Family, now concludes the epic story “Hunt the Batman.”

It’s all-out war as the “Hunt the Batman” arc comes to its pulse-pounding conclusion! The Next Batman faces off against Nightwing and the entire Bat-Family while Jason Todd, now known as Peacekeeper Red, must stop Warmonger from driving every citizen in Gotham City to riot. Can Bat and Red win this one? Can they even survive?

Positives

This comic has really accelerated in its pace and it’s a good thing.  We may have gotten conned….. was that Bruce pulling the strings all along to pull down the Magistrate?  Jason has some deep trust issues and can Bruce be just that manipulative?

DC is setting us on the path to a showdown between two Batmans.  If not… shame on me for seeing the clues in that light.    But Jason cannot take much more psychologically and I am afraid if this is true, Bruce will have spent all of his social currency among his friends…especially Dick.

Red Hood and The New Batman.  Whew!  This is going to be interesting!

Negatives

The series has definitely evolved as earlier issues seem to be no different from Batman: Black & White.  The art style has grown on me as a reader. The fact that there’s no color has not taken away from this comic, but it took some getting used to!

However, on a grander scheme, it appears that Future State is here to stay.  I just wonder how the catch-up will occur in the current timeline.  Readers are juggling with what is in the main timeline and switching gears to Future State.  For this reader, I want to see how this all shakes out instead of altering timelines.

Verdict

This culminates this mini-series, but it leaves a few questions.  It appears we now have a version of Batman and Robin that is arguably as lethal as it can get.  New Signal showing in the sky?  Criminals beware!
