The career of actor Peter Sarsgaard now falls under the shadow of the bat as Sarsgaard joins The Batman in undisclosed role.
The Wormwood and The Sound of Silence star has joined the cast of Matt Reeves’s The Batman. However, it is not yet known which character he’ll be portraying.
“The Batman”
The film project which reboots the Batman movie franchise, has filled roles with a very diverse cast. Robert Pattinson is the lead as Bruce Wayne, better known by his caped alter-ego. He is joined by Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepott/Penguin, Paul Dano as Edward Nygma/Riddler, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner James Gordon, and John Turturro as Carmine Falcone. The only role that has not been filled is District Attorney Harvey Dent. Comic fans know Dent is destined to become the schitzophrenic psychopath known as Two-Face. Even though Matthew McConaughey has been rumored to fill that role, will the coin be flipped by Peter?
The Long Halloween
Set for a 2021 release, rumors place the focus of The Batman on The Dark Knight’s early years and his often-overlooked mastery as a detective. The script is also rumored to be eyeing Jeph Loeb’s Batman: The Long Halloween miniseries as an inspiration. In that story Batman spends a year trying to solve a string of murders committed by a killer the press nickname “Holiday.” The killings happen on twelve holidays, starting on Halloween. The story also follows Harvey Dent’s descent into insanity and his disfiguring transformation into Two-Face.
Peter Sarsgaard enjoyed a previous DC connection. He portrayed antagonist Hector Hammond in the much-maligned Green Lantern opposite Ryan Reynolds in 2011. His wife, Maggie Gyllenhaal, played opposite former Batman Christian Bale in the 2008 box office hit The Dark Knight. His other credits span film and television, most notably Boys Don’t Cry, Blue Jasmine, The Magnificent Seven, The Looming Tower, and Wormwood.
