It’s been twelve years since we last saw a Green Lantern in a starring role of a live-action film, but it seems it won’t be that long of a wait until we see them again. The new co-CEO of DC Studios, James Gunn, recently confirmed on Twitter that Green Lantern content is “important” to the future of the DCU.
Important.

This is great news to hear, as the Green Lanterns are a portion of DC that has, up until this point, been criminally underutilized. We’ve gotten multiple animated movies, and have seen these characters in several different shows, including the amazing, yet short-lived Green Lantern: The Animated Series, but when it comes to live-action films, we got a random appearance in Justice League, and, of course, the 2011 Green Lantern movie starring Ryan Reynolds, which was a bit of a disappointment.
That’s why, when WB announced long ago that they were working on a Green Lantern series for HBO Max, fans couldn’t help but be excited. But then, a report surfaced claiming the project was being completely scrapped. However, in true James Gunn fashion, he couldn’t sit idly by and let the truth not be known, so he responded with one simple word — “Fake.”
Fake.

This series was originally announced back in October 2019, and was said to focus on Guy Gardner and Alan Scott, even going so far as to cast the roles with Finn Wittrock and Jeremy Irvine playing them, respectively. But then, this past October, it was revealed that the show was being refocused to center on John Stewart, the beloved Lantern made most popular from the Justice League animated series.
With Gunn shooting down rumors that the series is being canned, and his confirmation that content centered around the Green Lanterns is important to what he and fellow co-CEO Peter Safran have planned for the universe, it seems safe to say that a John Stewart Green Lantern series will be coming sooner rather than later.
The question remains whether Wittrock and Irvine will still be playing Guy Gardener and Alan Scott in this new, refocused series, but no matter what happens, we will be here to give you all the details as we find them out.
