Summary
The team finds Rip hiding in 1967 at film school. Only, Rip doesn’t know he is hiding. It turns out he used the time drive to travel through time to hide the Spear of Destiny. The problem is, he scrambled his brain and he thinks he is really this guy, Phil the film student. Of course, he is filming a version of the LOT without really knowing why. His prop man, just so happens to be George Lucas, who, upon the arrival of Merlyn and Darhk, quits film school. No problem there right?
We also learn that Giedon can really do anything as she helps Martin conduct brain surgery on Mick who is tired of hearing and seeing Snart. Martin, who repeatedly reminds Rory that he is not a medical doctor nor a psychologist, helps out of the fear of death. Â Yay team.
Positives
During the break, the CW announced they renewed all four superhero shows for next year. That makes this plucky little duckling a survivor. Remember before LOT even started and people were saying that it had no chance. It was too big. There were too many characters about whom nobody cared. Blah, Blah Blah. Well, Ha! This show is so good. It is funny. It is odd. It has a whole bunch of characters about whom, everyone cares.
Case in point, Mick and Martin have a sub-plot this week that has nothing to do with story except that we learn to care even more about Mick than we already did. Sure, we missed seeing Firestorm and Heatwave burn stuff, but honestly, the payoff which will come in a few episodes, will be well worth it.
Rip Hunter is back! You didn’t miss him? Well, maybe you didn’t think you missed him, but in fact, you did. Arthur Darvill’s amnesiac Phil the film student is funny, timely, and a friendly reminder that once he is right in the head, he and Sara will have to hash it out over who is Captain. That will be awesome. There are some massive nerd scenes this week as George Lucas is the aberration. More on that in the Easter Eggs. Nerds unite and rise up, even if Vixen is not super thrilled about it.
Negatives
Really, there is nothing to report here. This was a welcome comeback to the time off. Action, jokes, Rip Hunter, and George Lucas jokes. Wooo!
Verdict
This show has the fewest number of episodes of the superhero team of shows. That means there are only 8 episodes left. That seems like a lot but in no time, you will blink and it will be over. Savor this.
Easter Eggs
Nate names the team of villains the “Legion of Doom.” He says, “it was from an old Hanna-Barbera show I watched as a kid.” Of course, the show was Super Friends. I watched it too.
George Lucas, this whole episode is all about how you inspired a legion of nerds. Star Wars, Raiders, and even Howard the Duck get some love. It is super brilliant and I own the writers of this show a high five for owning that there is a generation of people for whom George Lucas changed everything. Art matters. It might seem stupid to some, but it means everything to someone else.
