Summary

“We call them Homo Nocterus.  The Apex.  it’s hard, seeing them up close.  people you once knew.”  – Dr. McCray Tiberius
“FULL THROTTLE DARK” In Nocterra #5 –  Part Five…It’s here!
The penultimate issue of NOCTERRA’s blockbuster first arc!
VAL “Sundog” Riggs must choose whether to keep her brother Emory safe in the mysterious Sanctuary or risk it all against Blacktop Bill  and hordes of human Shades to find the truth about the darkness once and for all!

Positives

Scott Snyder and Tony S. Daniel…. the arrival of Val and Emory to the Lux is just in time as “Em” is on the verge of a permanent transformation.  The Lux is both a healing environment, a scientific research facility and a sanctuary.  It is also a well-armed apocalyptic place where we do not know if everything that is presented is the actual truth.

Snyder’s script through flash backs and cliff hangers is great story telling.  Tony Daniel’s pencils that draw both hope, angst, and conflict.  To take on a new story and new environments and create this intriguing battle of light and dark is done effortlessly by Daniel (or at least it appears that way as I am sure a lot of sweat equity is put into these drawings).

Page 20 of this issue which conveys an intense conversation between Val and Emory is one of the finest displays of script and art working seamlessly together.  Who has grey lipstick in the Big PM?  Val and her skin is flawless save for the two band-aids on her face.  Tony Daniel and crew draw and paint facial features that are almost three dimensional popping off the page!

Tomeu Morey paints Val like he is painting Selina Kyle or Princess Diana – she shines brighter than the lights in The Lux!

Positives 2.0

Blacktop Bill is knocking on the door literally and the cliff hanger he provides is too great to mention in a review.  Snyder ends each issue with a reason to come back to the story and this first installment is running six issues.  I hope there is more in store for Val as there seems to be a lot to play for in the Big PM.

Blacktop Bill needs more frames as he has been dripped into the story thus far, so I anticipate Issue #6 is going to be like drinking from a Blacktop Bill fire hydrant!

Negatives

From art to script, this is arguably one of the biggest comics of the year.  Snyder and Daniel along with everyone on their team have created a science fiction tale that will stand for ages.

Verdict

BUY THIS BOOK! So we are marching towards the sixth and final issue of this Full Throttle Dark story line and it would easy as a collector to wait until the Trade Paperback is released in October.  Why would you even do that?  Get in on this story now as we are almost to a crescendo in it!  If you are not hooked yet, here is a link to the first issue.

What are you waiting for…Load up your rig and plunge into the Big PM.
