Robert Pattinson has revealed his inspiration for his take on Bruce Wayne in Matt Reeves’s The Batman… and it smells like teen spirit.

Robert Pattinson Channeling Kurt Cobain For Bruce Wayne? Recluse Instead of Socialite?

The actor taking on the cape and cowl is drawing more attention for his depiction of Bruce Wayne himself. Set in the second year of the Dark Knight’s career, fans have seen two trailers that have revealed a gothic grunge approach to Batman. But what hasn’t been seen is the philanthropic billionaire playboy persona that is Wayne’s true mask. Traditionally Bruce uses this mask to both dissuade possible suspicion from his secret and acquire information to aid him in other battles.  And director Reeves reveals you will not see that mask in this film, and it has much to do with his choice of background music during the writing process.

[As I was writing the first act] I put on Nirvana’s ‘Something in The Way.’ [That’s] when it came to me that, rather than make Bruce Wayne the playboy version we’ve seen before, there’s another version who had gone through a great tragedy and become a recluse. So I started making this connection to Gus Van Sant’s Last Days, and the idea of this fictionalized version of Kurt Cobain being in this kind of decaying manor.

He also confesses to being influenced by Robert’s previous role in the film Good Time, in which he saw some nuances of the tragic grunge innovator in his portrayal.

Pattinson, himself, adds:

Bruce has been hiding [away. He’s] not really a socialite at all. He’s building all these little contraptions and things, just with Alfred. And even Alfred thinks he’s gone insane!

The Batman also stars Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon, Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Paul Dano as Edward Nashton/The Riddler, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Robert Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin. Both Wright and Farrell’s characters are being prepared for the spinoff series of the film which is headed for HBO Max.

The Batman is scheduled to debut in theaters on March 4.
